In this chapter Jem and Scout see the prejudice that surrounds them. This year Scout is not getting along with Jack like she usually does. During Christmas time Atticus's brother Jack comes to visit. They almost start to fight because Cecil says that Scout's dad "defends niggers." A black man named Tom Robinson has been accused of raping a white woman and Atticus has been asked to defend him.
When Scout is at school she almost starts a fight with Cecil Jacobs. They aren't judged by the way they look but there relationship with white people. When Jem builds a snowman its first made of mud until Scout comes up to him and says "Jem, i ain't ever heard of a nigger snowman." This shows how blacks are looked at in the community. This shows her innocence but Atticus reassures her. In this chapter when Maycomb gets a real winter Scout believes that the world is going to end. The next day Miss Maudie is surprisingly happy since her house burnt down but she says she wishes she were there to see Boo Radley put the blanket over Scout so she could catch him. Later Jem realizes that Boo Radley put the blanket over her and he tells the whole story about the knothole. While this is happening someone puts a blanket over Scout. Many of the neighbors try to help save the things inside of her house, but lots of it burns to the ground. That night Atticus, Jem and Scout go outside and see Miss Maudies house on fire. This year is the first time in many years that Maycomb gets a real winter. For instance the pants being nicely hung over the fence. But in this chapter you see him as more sympathetic to Jem and Scout. Radley says that he filled it because the tree was dying.īoo Radley is originally portrayed as mean and a freak. The next day they find the knothole filled with cement.
This time its two figures carved from soap that look like Jem and scout. After a couple days later they find another gift in the knothole. As they are coming home from school one day they another gift in the knothole. A couple of days later, after school starts, Jem tells Scout that he found his pants hung nicely over the fence.
